To make a reduction print, a sketch is transferred to a linoleum block. All the parts of the block to remain white are carved away, and that block printed on all of the paper with the first (usually lightest) color. Then all the parts that are going to remain that first color are carved away, and the next color printed, and so on. By the end, all that’s left of the block is the color that was printed last.
This was one of my first major projects. Most of these small reduction prints are all 8 X 6 inches, with 3 colors.

Collagraphs are prints made from a matrix of cardboard or mat board, with things glued down on them. They are sealed, then inked, pushing the ink into all the crevasses. Then the surface wiped fairly clean, and they are run through an etching press with enough pressure so that the dampened paper pulls out all the ink.
It’s an egalitarian medium–everyone can make them with supplies they have on hand–cereal boxes, manilla folders, things picked up in the street, glue, some kind of varnish to seal it all. You could also roll them as relief prints and print them by hand, if you didn’t have access to an etching press.
